How Often Should You Really Change Your Oil?

November 8, 2025 · 4 min read

Ask ten drivers how often to change their oil and you'll get ten different answers. The truth is that the right interval depends on your car, your oil, and how you drive — and the famous '3,000 miles' rule is mostly a thing of the past.

Why oil changes matter

Engine oil does several jobs at once. It lubricates hundreds of moving metal parts, reduces friction and heat, and carries away tiny particles and contaminants. Over time, oil breaks down and gets dirty, losing its ability to protect. Fresh oil and a fresh filter keep your engine clean and running smoothly.

Skipping oil changes is one of the fastest ways to shorten an engine's life. Sludge builds up, parts wear faster, and what would have been a routine service becomes an expensive repair.

Conventional vs. synthetic

The biggest factor in your interval is the type of oil your car uses. Conventional oil typically needs changing every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Synthetic blends stretch a bit further, and full synthetic oil often lasts 7,500 to 10,000 miles or more.

Many newer vehicles are designed specifically for full synthetic oil and longer intervals. The best starting point is your owner's manual, which lists the manufacturer's recommendation. Your car may also have an oil-life monitoring system that estimates remaining life based on how you actually drive.

Florida driving counts as 'severe'

Here's something many drivers don't realize: a lot of everyday driving qualifies as 'severe service' in the manufacturer's eyes. That includes frequent short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing, and — importantly for us — sustained high heat.

Central Florida heat puts extra stress on your oil. If you do a lot of short drives around Kissimmee, sit in summer traffic, or tow a trailer, you may be better served by the shorter end of your recommended range.

Signs you're overdue

Even with a schedule, watch for clues. Oil that looks very dark and gritty on the dipstick, a louder or rougher-sounding engine, an oil-life or maintenance light, or a faint burnt smell all suggest it's time. If you can't remember your last oil change, it's probably due.

Make it simple

The easiest approach is to follow your manufacturer's interval, lean toward the shorter end if you drive in tough Florida conditions, and let a trustworthy shop keep track for you. A good oil change isn't just draining and refilling — it's also a chance to spot small problems early during a multi-point inspection.
